HTTP and web browsers were designed to deliver and display documents. Turning them into a platform for interactive applications involved all manners of nasty hacks, causing problems that we still don't know how to solve reliably. Trying to use the web for real-time applications will only make things worse. If we want a generic client for real-time server-based applications, we should use a system specifically designed to do so. The web isn't such a system.
