It eats at the stuff ON the metal. wd-40 is a solvent and protectant. NOT a lube, you are right about that. It is fine for storage though. Where did you get your info? Mine is from people who deal with guns a lot. Like the Box O' Truth pages. I betcha DR would use wd40 for a protectant as well.

Hoppes is good, though - good lube and even good solvent, better for powder than wd-40. But wd-40 is better for the crud on metal that isn't powder-related.
