People were starting to worry about this at least 40 years ago -- but nothing was done, on the basis that the news-media simultaneously pushed their rights to be treated as just another business enterprise, as well as their public-interest rights and privileges as "the Fourth Estate".

But no effective action was ever taken (in this country (Canada) there were three or four public inquiries and royal commissions to examine the issue. They all concluded it was a growing, and disquieting problem, but their recommendations were never followed up.
