Don't like the guy. The only time I've seen him talking was on a short segment of Fox News Sunday that came on the other day after our local news. He followed Romney on the program. I thought he spent a lot of time tap-dancing around the questions the guy asked him, slipping into campaign rhetoric instead of actually answering what was asked of him. The answers I heard Romney give, at least, didn't seem like he was trying to duck the question with bluster.
Overall, the jury for me is still out on the lot of the candidates, both Dem and Rep.
That said, I don't think we're doing much good in this thread. Certainly, Huckabee sounds like an idiot for saying stupid things, but are we helping the overall discourse of the election when we help glorify the kind of gleeful trash-talking that we saw in the link or, in some cases, here in this thread?
Everybody talks about how bad the mudslinging gets in our elections, but we still don't seem to mind cheering when one of the candidates does an "EPIC FAIL". It doesn't bother us when we say that a given candidate, and his supporters, are "bats4 insane". Or that his religious convictions somehow put him in the same boat as the Ayatollah.
What the heck is wrong with simply saying that the guy doesn't represent one's views and leaving the discussion on what he does or doesn't represent as a candidate? There's still plenty of room to point out his apparent lack of knowledge of the Declaration of Independence and/or the Constitution. There's even still plenty of room for discussion about whether or not his religious convictions would affect his ability to serve the Office of the Presidency with the objectivity the job requires. I have no problem with questioning any of that.
But it's really frustrating to me that we, as a country, can't question a candidate without mocking him or her...or his/her followers. It bothers me even more when I see people here that I respect leaning toward following those same trends.
Sorry for the rant and sorry for stepping on toes, if I have. I'd be happy to discuss this more offline, if people want to rip on me, but don't want to turn the thread into a flamewar. I promise I'll listen. My email is in my diary. |
