Journalism is like politics in that the lower levels are usually more honest. Those just starting out, or working for local organizations are more honest and more trustworthy than their bigger counterparts.

But they're still people -- You make the consequences of knowingly lying and fabricating so horrific that they'd rather either take the hit for telling the truth, or simply not report it at all if they can't confirm it, rather than becoming a gossip rag churning out hearsay.
