Specifically because it can be seen as one logical level of indentation. Some people prefer the visual equivalent of a 2 space indentation (it's my favorite), while others want 4 or even 8 spaces. When you use tabs, it's just a matter of configuration to make it look right, no matter your preference. If you use spaces, you're basically pushing your preference on everyone who has to work with it later.
