the whole point of Zeroconf (and its varies relatives) is that neither local configuration on the workstation nor central administration on some server is required to establish a working local area network. At least in the microsoft implementation that includes Internet connectivity through UPnP enabled routers.

Just connect the machines together and turn them on. They'll introduce each other by themselves via multicast (hence the names Rendevouz and Bonjour for Apple's implementation).

The Linux implementation is Avahi.
