...with that logic, we should also not keep matches and cigarette lighters around, since kids get ahold of them and accidentally start housefires. Same thing could be said for medicines and caustic chemicals, since accidental ingestion is dangerous as well.

I know those are bad analogies because there are differences between firearms and matches, lighters, medicines, et al. But I guess the point I would make is that there are *lots* of dangers around that our kids can come into contact with. It's always better to keep dangerous things away from kids, but we aren't always able to do so.

Teaching kids to be safe around dangerous things buys us the extra layer of protection for them...it's not a perfect solution, but it helps.
