Where Phlox is kidnapped by the Klingons to help cure a virus. Turns out the Klingons were experimenting with human augment DNA - trying to create a Klingon Augment and one of them had a nasty virus - so it became an augment plague. millions infected.
stage 1 = smooth forehead
stage 2 = get very strong, smarter, more aggressive
stage 3 = become violent and get very sick
stage 4 = become extremely infectious, die.
Phlox found a way to cure the disease at stage 1 and eradicated it eventually, but it is a DNA-level change, so the modified klingons bred true. Thus we have the smooth headed klingons of TOS era. As second-class inferiors they were likely hounded out of existence by TNG times, but as Worf stated "We do not speak of that." |
