While you, I, and any other sane person would agree that it's the parents' responsibility what the kid does, there are bats4-crazy-level insane people over here, and most of them seem to have access to similarly-bats4-crazy-level insane lawyers. And with the way the civil courts work over here, if even one of those people decided to sue the toy company over that particular toy, it'd cost them (tens of? hundreds of?) millions to fight it. Even though they'd almost assuredly win (because in most cases, judges aren't nearly that crazy), it's not worth the cost of the fight to the toy company.

So they issue a recall for the item instead. Yes, that's expensive, and yes, it's pointless and dumb (to any sane person), but unfortunately sane people seem to be becoming less and less common over here. :-(
