but most laptops intended for windows have an additional "function" key that when pressed with the right F# key it will cycle through: LCD, External, LCD & External display settings.

On the two laptops I have one uses Fn + F8 and the other Fn + F5, but this won't work from an external keyboard as it doesn't have the Fn key (I tried using ctrl/alt/etc but no luck)

If your willing to try a hail-mary, a few combinations of the system keys on the built-in keyboad with F5/F8 (at first) and you might get lucky and stumble across the right combo.

Oh, in the display settings for the 2nd monitor, the "use as primary" option is always greyed out for me until the extend desktop to this monitor is checked.
