see, the only problem with that and the reason they say that is that a large shock load of hot items can shorten the life of the compressor which was only designed to keep cold things cold, not cool them down from hot... but if the fridge already has cold things in it, they act as a capacitor/buffer, so the shock load isn't much more then opening the door alone is.
And they were made to be used, not sit there... even opening the door gives it some shock load to deal with.
If the fridge is totally empty then yes itll hurt it more but if you have stuff in there - especially dense stuff like water that holds a lot of heat/lack of heat then its nothing.
