like 500 years ago man was not discharging billions of tons of substances into the environment. We also know that many of the substances released have been known to cause cancer, break down ozone, etc. In general I don't think anyone has a valid argument against either of these two points. The problem is the earth is such a complex system and man has a very limited data set to work with. So while we know the micro results of $substance on $thing, we cannot make a complete macro-prediction for the entire planet without making too many assumptions, IMHO it's these assumptions that both sides of the argument are fighting over.
