The idea was to start up a bunch of named-pipe listener threads that were waiting for a modem packet containing a credit card request. The listener would then poll the bank of modems to find an open one, then spawn the handshake process to send/receive the CC request and its corresponding response. Unfortunately, I left the company before I was able to see if the app worked the way it was supposed to. I had the "CC-over-the-modem" thing working, but I wasn't so sure about the integrity of the transactions over the set of listener threads. I'm sure my boss there threw away my code and started over when I was gone, anyway. ;)
