... it many times and from the frequency and way of usage I get that it is used *on purpose* instead of "work".

Aside from the aspect that for quite a lot of people there is something wrong with work - whatever that may be, conditions, own/coworkers'/boss' attitude (permutate the order of these as you deem it right), ...

Well, aside from that aspect, about when has the word "work" first been purposely transformed to "wrok"?
