| Back in my university time: (funny story) |

Hmmm... for ME it wasn't inappropriate what I have said. For the professors there it was.... But I will tell you the whole story:
As a student, I worked in various commitees of my department (dep. of physics). Shortly before my graduation, I was the student member of a commission which reviewed all PhD applications. Usually nobody had any objections, so all of the applications were just waved through.
On one day, the chairman of this commission read the applications more carefully. One thing grabbed his attention: The 'Vordiplom' mathematics grades of the applicants (Vordiplom = Pre-graduation exams after the first years here in Germany. Similiar to bachelor). In physics here, the mathematics exams are usually very difficult, and people usually just pass the exam, with grades around 3-4 (C-D). Anything better is very uncommon, and only people like S. Hawking would get an A.
This professor became a little bit agitated, and exclaimed 'But whats that??? Why do they all have such bad grades in mathematics? I don't understand?' And towards me: 'You are still a student. Can you explain me this?'
I wanted to explain him the real facts (difficult exam ...) but instead I said: 'Y'know, when its time of the mathematics exam, people are usually 20 or 21 years old, and its spring time. We have better things to do than to learn boring mathematics.'
Directly afterwards, the room became deadly silent, and all professors looked at me in terror. After some seconds of shock, the chairman continued the session... and nobody ever asked me again that question. |
