| It seemed more a of a show of religion, or a show of will power and respect. He may have wanted to see if he COULD, if the state would allow him to have free will and allow him to allow himself to die, and in the end his final words was about how he finally felt respected.
Also, and sadly, there is a possibility God will interpret it as suicide. To let oneself die could be considered suicide. But no Human can make that judgement and nobody can really tell what's going to happen to him in the after. We just hope for the best.
