why are we talking about death on a computer board? Why mention that a friend died? Or why do some of us mention that we found, or lost a job, or that they're having financial problems?

Because we're not just a computer board. We're a type of family, with computers/technology in common, but it doesn't change that we all can offer each other condolences or that we all have religious, or lack of, beliefs.

This board is more of a talking about whatever's on our mind or whatever we think and feel, as long as it doesn't tick off the mods.

4 of my best friends are all computer geeks like me, different degrees and different areas, but we don't all talk about computers/technology all the time, that'd be boring.
