Why won't windowx xp update properly? :( by cybergeek 2007-10-22 22:36:55
So, every time I restart my computer, the auto-updater pops up and says "dude! there's stuff for ya!"

I, of course, react with delight and click on the balloon to launch the updater. It gets partway through downloading the file ("Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1" when it coughs and dies. The update is not installed, and no real reason that I can find is given. (I just tried using the application that I downloaded from MS's site to do the install instead of the auto-updater. It said "access denied" and then explained that it was *partially* installed, and that it might not behave properly. Then it restarted my computer without asking, despite that it claimed that no changes had been made 10 seconds prior. Grr.)

Similarly, whenever I attempt to upgrade to WMP 10 (I think it is), the *exact* *same* *thing* happens - to the extent that it tries to update, then can't update, then tries to blame me for it. >.>)

Any ideas? It's been doing this for a while now, and I'm kinda tired of having to go into services.msc on EVERY SINGLE RESTART to turn off the auto-updater.
