Granted, there's quite a bit you can do for a week that you can't do for a month (or more). A few gallon jugs of water, frozen solid, helped keep the stank down to a minimum, and we emptied most of the fridge when we knew we had to evacuate. (Worst part: leaving a burger---still in the wrapper---on the counter, and coming back to find it a week later. I mastered the art of invert-bag-over-hand-holdbreath-runinsideandgrabtheburgerwiththebag-pu llhandoutofbagreinvertingit-runoutside-exhale-retch very rapidly that day.)
