Studying (the history of) the position of women in society, and by extension, the position of men. The male/female social norms are quite defining for a society, when you think about it; it certainly merits study, especially if you're a social scientist of any plumage.
Simple example: most men in a university career have a housewife at home. Most women in a university career have a husband who has his own (part-time) job. If you want to make professor, it's pretty much assumed that you have the former kind of freedom and time to dedicate to your career. This is not the only reason we have so few female profs, but it's one of the reasons. |
