Some appliances only go into standby when they're "off" so they keep drawing electricity even when not in use. I expect that anything with a hard off switch would be completely off, but anything with a clock display or that you can turn on with a remote probably draws some current between times.

You can get a meter that plugs into the wall for about $20 that'll tell you how much power things draw. (Do a search on "Kill A Watt" on your favorite shopping engine and you'll have a bunch of hits)
