| It depends on the appliance. |

As a general guide items with a physical on / off switch that makes a nice click (e.g. toasters, kettles, lamps etc...) it makes no difference, off for them is truly off.
Anything which has a soft on/off button that doesn't physically move much (computers, monitors etc...) will be using power all of the time. How much power depends on how they were designed. In theory it's possible to do this sort of thing pulling uW's (less power that your electricity meter is using). In practice most things will be using a fair amount more but still fairly insignificant in comparison to your every day use. Computers are probably some of the worst offenders in this category.
Finally there are items with standby or remote switch on features (tv's, DVD players etc...) These can take fairly significant amounts of power when "off". If you use them almost every day then the saving from unplugging them probably isn't worth the effort, the off power is still far less than the on power and on the grand scheme of things you would save far more energy by just turning the heating/AC down/up by one or two degrees. If on the other hand they aren't used very often then unplugging them is a good idea. |
