When I bid out one of my group clients' health benefits, I can usually do a bit of haggling and get one company to undercut the other. Later on, if the company is being a jerk about service or claims, I can half-threaten to move the business elsewhere in the future. Bad as the customer service is, it would get a LOT worse if there was no competition to keep them moving.
