In actuality, insurance companies have driven the price up. See, there are only so many doctors; if you have health insurance you are more likely to go to the doctor. The law of supply and demand says that this will raise costs. Factor into that that the AMA limits the numbers of students at medical schools and you have a diminishing supply of services.
The fact of the matter is that you don't need to be the smartest guy around to be a general practitioner, especially not with the advances in computer databases. We do need the really smart guys for the specialists, but when I broke my hand last year it shouldn't have cost $800 for an x-ray and a cast.
If all you have is a co-pay, you may go to the doctor for a runny nose. This is basic economics.
Also, my uncle in Toronto had to wait three years for a knee replacement. |
