Really dumb question. by mpicklesimer1 2007-10-22 09:41:27
I have a webcam set up on my desk at home. I'd like to use this camera to monitor my room while I'm at work. I've found a couple of howto's around, but haven't had much luck getting it to work. I think I may be the problem.

What I'm trying to do is have my web server be able to pick up a video stream off the camera. Unfortunately, I don't know much about the details involved (Camera, software, vsftp, etc.). For security reasons, I don't want to have vsftpd use anonymous logins or guest accounts, which is what all the howto's I've found so far demonstrate. What's the point of using a "Very Secure" FTP daemon if you're going to leave it wide open? Is there anyone who can give me detailed instructions on a step by step? Anyone gotten this to work in the past? Unfortunately, money is an object, so I'm trying to work with what I've got for the time being.

If it helps, my camera is a Logitech Orbit MP with face tracking, hooked up to my Windows XP Pro gaming rig, and the server is running Gentoo/Apache. Thanks in advance.
