...it can very often cost a lot MORE than that, depending on the group and your age and the age of your coworkers. Also, not everybody has coverage available through work- which means no FSA or Section 125 plan to pay your premium and routine expenses pre-tax.

Yes, it needs to be treated as a cost of living like any other. But the cost of family coverage routinely gets into the four figures now, unless you have a high deductible plan. The cost of care has gotten problematic. And around here at least, $500/month is someone's mortgage payment in a modest but decent part of town.
