If possible: max it out. Saves the hassle later of:

(a) finding compatible RAM
(b) finding matching RAM

I've had serious reductions in performance using non-matched RAM. My one hp Evo N800 performed far worse with 512MB (2x256MB non-matched) than it did with the original 256MB. Luckily we have a few of these so I did a bit of swapping - 2 x old RAM in one laptop and 2 x new RAM in the other.

The price for RAM initially comes down and then seems to increase the longer you leave it.
