Should those who slurp WiFi be jailed? by Illiad2007-10-08 11:34:07
If the owner of the router is going to be ignorant by Cural 2007-10-08 18:32:14
about security, then they should not be upset about other people using their connection.

Sure, some may argue that not everybody knows how to secure their wireless connection, but ignorance is never an excuse. If you're going to get a wireless router and setup a wireless network, you ought to do some research into securing that network, even if the extent of your research is just 64-bit WEP. Even if it is laughably pathetic, at least it's security, and you're protected from all but those who are actively trying to hack your system.

I've experienced this many times, with customers on the phone. Someone will have troubles setting up their new Wi-Fi printer to their network, because it's not working the way it should. Problem is they're trying to setup the printer to router A, while their computer is connected to router B that belongs to their next-door neighbour. Usually, they're completely surprised by the revelation that they've been using their neighbour's net access for these past several months, and just assumed they were connected to their own router this whole time.
