i've ran ping time sensitive games on a P3-M 500Mhz before on a friend's network that uses AES (more CPU intensive than TKIP) just fine.

Now, the thing about wireless is that even in the same room with great signal you're going to be running about 1/2 the speed to the internet that you can manage with a cable. (have measured this myself)
