Studying your boyfriend's religion to get a better idea on "where he's coming from," that's great. But you do not necessarily have to convert. Especially not right now. Religion should be far deeper than merely compromising on what movie you go to see. A relationship is more likely to be strong if both partners hold the same values, which can be evidenced by religion but not necessarily a complete substitute. So if you convert just to be "agreeable," you're not really lending strength to the relationship. If you convert because the religion truly speaks to your heart, then you're doing it for the right reason. Not just because your SO practices that religion.
