I just did that on my colleagues 'puter. Some weird hardware failure causes windows to mess up. So safe files, pave, reinstall....crash...call dell :( ps. I know win98/95/me had the repair install option, 2k and xp don't do it....even if you try. Just nuke & pave as you said. You might want to try a 'fixmbr' or 'fixboot' in the repair console....very small chance that might work
