Depending on your base OS (Ubuntu 64bit here) you can make physical devices available to the guest OS in VMWARE. You may have to play with permissions. I run my very legacy Windows XP as a guest under Linux just so I can run my legacy Retrospect and get at backups. This means making the SCSI tape drive available to the guest.
