Oooh, new Google paranoia by bobmon 2007-10-05 12:48:17
...so, I just googled for "OIP pizza" --- that's "Original Italian Pizza", a pizzeria. Google came up with a bunch of hits --- number 1 on the list?

THE STORE IN MY HOMETOWN!

Never mind that this was actually *good* in this case. How do they know where I am???? (I live in a small, obscure place!)

IP? I don't think so --- it'd look like a Verizon DSL IP, and could be anywhere in northeastern PA (probably at least 150 OIP franchises).

The fact that I have a (multiple...) google/gmail accounts? Maybe... but I don't happen to be logged in to any of them at the moment.

Cookies? Okay... but I've never looked for "OIP" or anything similar before...

Sophisticated, thesis-producing analysis of the traceroute output? Yeah.........no.

Quasi-seriously, I'm not surprised that some data-mining (and maybe a bit of correlation) could come up with this. Match my IP with the fact that I have an account, maybe some other info...

But I didn't think that commercial practice had gotten quite so detailed yet.

*sigh* time marches on....
