Certainly, for the people who develop diabetes because of lifestyle (obesity, being the main one...assuming that obesity is a lifestyle choice, of course), it's frustrating to see advances that address that form of diabetes compared to those that address the more serious form.
But I'm guessing that the reason the researchers were looking at Type 2 was because it was easier to study and creating the onset through obesity gives them a means of examining if there are on/off triggers. Having found a possible trigger in the enzyme they were discussing, it's quite likely that the research will *also* apply to Type 1 diabetics.
For myself, I've always flirted with symptoms of diabetes, even as a scrawny, bone-skinny kid. I was pretty close to needing to start testing my blood sugar levels at the end of last year when my weight peaked out near its highest level (~235 lbs, for a 5'10" me). That's why I devoted myself to losing weight and this time, keeping it off (total loss ~55 lbs, since the start of the year).
My tendency towards diabetes, combined with my strong family history for it (my uncle died from complications after 40+ years of 3+ shots a day), makes me appreciate *any* research that gets scientists and doctors closer to figuring out new ways of controlling it. Hopefully, they'll be able to translate more of the recent findings to help those who truly need the most help and whose lives are the most affected by this horrible disease.
