His father was Kenyan, his mother a white American. He grew up on Hawaii and spent four teen-age years in Jakarta. So the interesting thing might be, that while he is a Kenyan/American mix, it's not related to any of his direct ancestors being slaves in the US. So does that really qualify for an "African-American" or "American of African Heritage" label? ;-P (The Wikipedia Article has links to the Sources / References)
