The original had some stolen code in the firmware and 16 megs internal ram. Instead of going through a PR disaster and Lawsuits, they opened up their source code. Which allowed custom firmware to be developed. Over the years they reduced the Ram and remade the firmware and closed the source. Then do to outcry from geeks they released WRT54GL where L is for Linux. Wikipedia has the fine details.
