The other thing to keep in mind, of course, is how important it is to you to finish the story within the NaNo period. I know many NaNoers who continue writing their stories after 50000 words has been and gone.... My motivation is almost completely to do with the NaNo experience, so for me it is important to hit the limit and finish the story ideas by Nov 30. But you may not feel that way. In which case you can pick your "winning" word limit for November and let the story continue on for as long as you need/as long as you're motivated to keep writing it after November.
