how DBMSes work behind the scenes will be a big asset to you. A lot of what you will need to know, however, depends on the specific DBMS you will be dealing with - every one works slightly differently - from backend storage to query optimizer and connections. Either general knowledge or DBMS specific knowledge on their own will not be very useful, but together you'll have the skillset you need.
