More work for you, of course... but if you're gone (say, at work) during the day, another cat gives each a companion. We had three, and that seemed a pretty good balance. One died of old age, and the survivors knew she was gone, but they'are okay together and react to an adopted outside cat pretty well. (Can't bring that one inside because of FIV). This is a bit anthropomorphic, but I think a single inside cat with no companionship throughout the day is a lonely creature.
