I've seen such buildings ("Plattenbau") all around Germany, for example in Hamburg, Frankfurt/Main and Stuttgart, which are not really "Soviet era" towns, IIRC :-)

The idea behind that was building many cheap, acceptable quality flats as fast as possible. And they reached that goal.
For example I know from Chemnitz (Saxony) - they raised flats for 90.000 people within 15 years!

Yes, I lived in those flats for a long time. No, I don't want to go back (but only because I can afford better). Yes, if I had to, I'd move back in.
