a 2.4Ghz P4 isn't that old... I've got a lesser system (my PVR box) doing software MPEG-2 encoding. It's only got a Athlon XP 2100+ in it. Thankfully it does have DDR memory though. 1.5Gig of it... that box barely uses 512, not quite sure what to do with the rest.
