However, I challenge anyone to tell the difference between the original CD and an MP3 encoded at, say, 320kbits, even on audiophile headphones. Depending on the listener and the music, way lower bitrates may be indistinguishable to them.

Yes, information is lossed when compressing to any lossy format (duh!). At decent bitrates, the information lost is insignificant, though.
