| iPod + iTunes + Intel RAID + Vista == BAD! |

My last customer of the day had an issue with his hard drive. He said, "I plugged in my iPod, and now my system won't boot up! It's been doing this for four days!" This was his third call in two days, and we had already dispatched motherboard, two hard drives, two hdd cables and memory to him. The problem is repeatable, using the following method:
Load Vista
Install iTunes
Try to send a file from iTunes to the iPod
Result: Instant BSOD. When you reboot the machine, it says the RAID array is degraded.
The actual problem? It's not Microsoft's fault, for once. Nor is it Apple's fault. The fault lies with the driver provided by Intel to run the RAID card on this gentleman's computer.
There is no "officially sanctioned" fix yet. There is one website which has suggested a registry hack, but I'm not willing to try it on a customer's computer that cost US$14,000 (It's a REALLY nice Dell Precision Workstation being used for extremely high-end AutoCAD).
Here's some links with information:

The third link looks promising, with a registry hack directly from Intel. I'm going to look into this more at the office tomorrow and see if it works. I will keep everyone updated. |
