Mature rainforest actually absorbes very little net carbon dioxide - net absorption only occurs through growth. The most carbon friendly (though not the most ecosystem friendly) way to use rainforests would be to regularly chop them down, bury the wood (or use it in long-term projects that require lumber, even) and replant it.
