The first time around at 2GB into the disk there were 180 errors for 6922kB. The process stopped due to an untimely file size limit on the server machine with the user-mode nfs-server. On the second run with the other machine as server where I don't have that limitation I'm currently at about the 2GB boundary and there are already 420 errors with 17500kB of failed data. :( (When I turned on the notebook this evening in order to rescue the data, the MBR had gone bad as well...)
