We do have at least some basis for a judgement by Saru 2007-08-13 13:16:33
That is, they broke into the house of a completely innocent family.
As DesertRat rightfully asserts, this is difficult to armchair quarterback. However, I do not think it too much to assume that some basic legwork would've revealed the snitch's mistake, saving this family their emotional duress.
I agree, we have to avoid creating legislation that cripples our police force, or they wouldn't be able to protect us at all, and the entire system would be a waste of taxpayer money.
But neither can we allow any of their actions to go unscrutinized. "With great power comes great responsibility." We the people have granted them powers to enforce the law, we need to ensure that they are using it responsibly. If they didn't double check their snitch's lead, then I think the family has a worthwhile case against the police, and against the judge that awarded a warrent based on the words of one rat.
