| This time it's BBC causing an uproar with local ISP's. It seems that the 'beeb' has introduced a new service that allows people to download popular shows soon after they have aired.
The ISP's are complaining that this will tax their infrastructure, and want BBC to help pay for upgrades - which is really another way of saying "Pay up or we will block you". Extortion, IOW. The twist in this case is that BBC is not hosting the content. According to the article, it will provide the service as a peer-to-peer service, so the bandwidth limitation can't be throttled at the BBC server(s).
Is the ISP's demand reasonable? Or will the slowdown caused by using the service be felt so much by people that they won't host the service, and the problem will really be self-regulating? Only time will tell. |
