| If you wanted to think me an idiot for believing something contrary to a well established scientific theory (e.g. literal, Biblical Creationism vs. Evolution), then you'd have some justification for doing so.
But if my faith is simply a belief in something despite the absence of any evidence. And if that belief encompasses productive and practical ideals of brotherhood and sisterhood for all mankind, and treating everyone as I wish to be treated, I don't see that you would have any justification for respecting me less as a person.
You may not understand my belief. You may not share the belief. You may not even respect the belief itself. But if my having that belief is not only not harmful to others or myself, but gives me a foundation to treat others as I would want others to treat me, you should be able to at least respect that.
Now, if you want to come down on all the people who preach the love, but then turn around and point at everyone who's different, calling them evil and damning them, I'm with ya. That is abominable behavior to me as well. |
