it builds a sort of petty-credit (is that a real phrase?) setup. I'd phrase it as "I owe you one", but it's a bit less obligatory than that... "Sure, I can cover your lunch," and so on. It may not be repaid in the same fashion (or the same amount) but it all balances out in the end.
